Feliz Navidad

Merry Christmas

December 22, 2011 (Thursday)

”picFeliz Navidad has been recognized as one of the 25 classic Christmas songs written during the 20th Century. Its selection was based upon its popularity with artists and audiences.

Written in Spanish, it has bi-lingual lyrics. It is short, easy to remember, and "catchy."

Jose Feliciano played the accordion when he was a small boy, and made his first professional appearance in a theater in Puerto Rico at the age of nine. He has been in the music business for 57 years. In 1970 he was asked by his colleague to write a Christmas song, and "Feliz Navidad," the Spanish Christmas greeting, was his first attempt. As he examined his work, he realized the song could be popular only if it could be accepted by those who speak Spanish and those who speak English. The result is a truly bi-lingual song loved by virtually everyone. Feliciano is proud of the song, not only because it has brought him fame, but mainly because he feels it has brought people closer together. It has been around now for forty-one years.
