Let's pretend

or let's not

October 25, 2011 (Tuesday)

”picHalloween is the season of the year for masks. Kids and adults alike don their facial ware and hide their true identity.

Is Halloween the only time of year when people wear masks? No, we do it every day.

Refreshing indeed is the person who "lets it all hang out," as the saying goes, and lives by the philosophy of "what you see is what you get." These people are easy to know and, although you may not like everything they say and do, at least you know they are not trying to hide anything.

We develop certain behaviors as we go through life that are known as "defense mechanisms," habits that we develop to keep from being hurt.

Jesus spoke up for honesty in relationships. "Let your 'yes' be 'yes' and let your 'no' be 'no.'" We all know what he meant by that.

When Halloween is over, perhaps all of us should ditch our masks and just be ourselves. We might discover that we actually like ourselves as we really are. If not, we can change. But we don't have to go on pretending.
