Providential Care

God cares

October 27, 2011 (Thursday)

”picMy neck hurts a little. Yesterday morning I walked off a step that was six or eight inches higher than I thought it was. I guess you could say it was an accident, but not really, because about all that happened was that I was surprised by the step down. I've heard of people doing that and taking quite a fall. At my age, it's a dangerous situation that could result in a broken hip or other serious injuries. I consider myself fortunate, then, because the soreness in my neck will go away soon but will serve as a reminder that something a lot worse could have happened.

I told the church Sunday morning about a near accident I had on the way to church. Nothing happened, no cars were dented and no one was hurt, so I won't go into the details, but suffice it to say that all the factors were present for a humdinger of a wreck and somebody could have been hurt or worse. As I told the church, I believe God helped us all out. No accident happened. I believe God watches over us.

My belief about these things does not preclude the possibility of bad things happening. By the time you read this, you or I could have been involved in something terribly serious and devastating. But that's life. If something like that happens -- and it will happen today to many people -- then I have to believe that there is meaning and purpose in it all. If God didn't cause it, he allowed it. And there is a reason. In the meantime, it doesn't hurt for me to thank the Lord every time I complete a safe trip on today's highways.

Years ago there was a nursing home across the street from our old church building in downtown Rockport, and every Sunday afternoon we had a little worship service for the residents. Without fail, every time we met we sang the hymn, "God Will Take Care of You." It did us all good.
