D-Day

June 6, 1944

June 6, 2011 (Monday)

”picToday, June 6, is the 67th anniversary of "D-Day," the day the allies invaded Normandy with the intention of liberating Europe from the Axis powers.

A movie that showed the horrors of that day was, "Saving Private Ryan." It impressed upon viewers the horrors of war.

Clarence Walstad was a chaplain on that day, and he went with the troops to Omaha Beach. As they crossed the English Channel, he led many soldiers to Christ. Many years later, he and Mrs. Walstad moved to Rockport and faithfully attended the First Baptist Church of Rockport.

I saw an interview with a World War II veteran the other day. He said he was of the opinion that Americans are forgetting that awful war, because when he spoke at a public school he was introduced by a teacher as a veteran of "World War Eleven."

From "The Recessional" we have these words:

God of our fathers, known of old—
Lord of our far-flung battle line—
Beneath whose awful hand we hold
Dominion over palm and pine—
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget—lest we forget!
