How to Nearly Drown

At supper time

May 31, 2011 (Tuesday)

”pic"Water boarding" is a technique used to force detainees to tell their secrets to interrogators. They say it simulates drowning, and the person receiving the treatment actually thinks he is drowning.

I guess what happened to me at supper last evening was "Soup boarding." I sat down in my recliner in front of the T.V. with a bowl of soup in a tray on my lap. I was enjoying it, so I took a double scoop in my spoon and filled my mouth with the delicious stuff. Then I had an uncontrollable urge to cough. So I did. The result was soup in my nose and throughout my sinuses. I felt like I was drowning. In soup.

We sometimes say to people who are depressed because they feel guilty, "Don't torture yourself!" Too bad somebody didn't issue that warning to me before supper last evening.

Maybe I should write myself a note: "Never cough with your mouth full of food." Unless you are willing to open your mouth." Perhaps I should always put an empty bowl on the tray for the stuff that didn't make it to the throat.

I should be glad, I suppose, to have one more story to tell: "A funny thing happened to me on the way to old age... "
