Look out!

Be careful

October 20, 2008 (Monday)

picture of CharlesEvery time I pass a dead animal on the road, I want to apologize. There is nothing fair about the situation. The animal had no way of understanding the situation.

Accidentally running over an animal on the highway is no fun, either. It’s a sad situation for all involved. I still vividly recall hitting a large tortoise on a South Texas highway ten years ago. It’s an unpleasant memory. The accident was unavoidable, and sad. The poor creature was suddenly destroyed, and I was left with a painful conscience, wondering if there had been some way to avoid hitting it with my car.

Actually, a million vertebrates become roadkill each day in our country. The average cost of repairing an automobile involved in a collision with a large animal is $2000. The number of people killed in such incidents each year is 200. Perhaps you have been involved in one of these accidents. A few weeks ago, just after sunset, a large deer appeared in front of our car as we drove in Aransas County. Dwight was driving, and he successfully braked the car, avoiding an accident, but most people would not have reacted so quickly. It was scary. Not far from the church.

Always be careful out there, ya heah? If it’s a feral hog or a big buck, you could be a victim. If it’s just a squirrel, your conscience will hurt for sure. And don’t be a dunce who intentionally runs down a small animal. It’s one of God’s creatures. Respect that. Ve haf vays uf deeling mit u.
