..freedom's call..

We must be vigilant, we must be diligent, American Patrol

On this Memorial Day weekend, my thoughts keep running back to an
old song I was taught in school in the sixth grade, entitled “American
Patrol.”

The song was originally written without lyrics as a march in 1885, by
F. W. Meacham, but became a popular patriotic song in both World
War I and II.

I could not find the lyrics printed anywhere, but I’ve pieced together
what I can remember:

We must be vigilant, we must be diligent, American Patrol
With arms for the army, ships for the navy,
Let this be our goal

We must be vigilant, we must be diligent, American Patrol
Protect our shoreline to the doorline
Of every native soul

We need our solidarity
Or else divided we will fall.
Protect the popularity
Of peace and happiness for all.

Behind our cause we must keep rallying
Let their be no dilly- dallying
Keep us free from shilly-shallying
Hark to freedom’s call!

(Finale:)
The American, the American Patrol!
